Bus gate exemptions

When the East Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood bus gates are operational they will be managed by cameras with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR).

Exemptions will apply to the bus gates on Avonvale Road, Marsh Lane and Pilemarsh for:

  • Buses
  • Emergency vehicles
  • Bicycles
  • Solo motorcycles
  • Taxis
  • Residents of the East BristolLiveable Neighbourhood area whose vehicle has a disabled tax class - you'll need to apply online for this exemption.
  • Residents of the East Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood area who have a Blue Badge registered to their address can nominate one vehicle registered to the same address for an exemption. Apply online for this exemption.
  • Professional carers who work in homes of people who live within the East Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood area - you'll need to apply online for this exemption.
  • Parents or carers who live within the East Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood area who receive a personal travel budget for their child with SEND. We'll contact eligible residents before the trial goes live in 2025.
  • Residents of the East Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood area who are on a low income, who meet the eligibility criteria, and need to drive for work. Apply online for this exemption.

If your exemption application is successful, your vehicle will be given a digital exemption. You won't need to display anything in the vehicle.

Most exemptions are valid for one year from the date of your application. You'll need to reapply every year. The Low Income Work Exemption cannot be renewed.


Low income worker bus gate exemption or additional travel offers

Extra support is available for households on a low income within the East Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood.

To qualify, you must either receive Council Tax Reduction and/or Housing Benefit and/or Universal Credit.

You may be able to receive:

  • £250 towards First Bus tickets or £150 towards a reconditioned bike or
  • A bus gate exemption for the trial area's three bus gates for 12 months (if you need to drive for work). This cannot be renewed.
