Avonvale Road – bus gate
A bus gate west of the Marsh Lane junction and east of Beam Street.
The measure will include red road surfacing, 'bus gate' road markings and would be enforced with cameras.
The following exemptions will be available at all of the bus gates as part of the scheme:
- emergency services
- refuse vehicles
- professional carers providing care within the community.
- parents with children attending SEND schools
- taxis and private hire vehicles
- Disabled Class Vehicles
- cycles and e-scooters
This would mean these vehicles would be able to drive through the bus gate without receiving a fine.
The exemptions in these locations mean that car journeys will be simpler for anyone providing professional care or who has challenging and time constrained journeys associated with care. The taxi and private hire exemption provides more flexibility for people working in the taxi trade and makes the area more accessible for people who rely on taxis.
The zebra crossing will remain in the middle of the bus gate. The bus gate will help prioritise the number 5 bus service by stopping through traffic travelling along Avonvale Road and Beaufort Road.
Avonvale Road, Pilemarsh – bus gate
A bus gate at the junction of Avonvale Road with Pilemarsh.
The measure will include red road surfacing, 'bus gate' road markings and would be enforced with cameras.
The following exemptions will be available at all of the bus gates as part of the scheme:
- emergency services
- refuse vehicles
- professional carers providing care within the community.
- parents with children attending SEND schools
- taxis and private hire vehicles
- Disabled Class Vehicles
- cycles and e-scooters
This would mean these vehicles would be able to drive through the bus gate without receiving a fine.
The bus gate will also help to prioritise the number 5 bus service by stopping through traffic travelling from Church Road (A420) via Avonvale Road onto Blackswarth Road.
Barnes Street – pocket park
A pocket park on Barnes Street.
This measure will help stop traffic skipping the traffic signals at the Blackswarth Road to access Church Road (A420).
People can still access the area by car using alternative routes, butroutes but will not be able to pass through this point.
A loading bay will be introduced on Barnes Street to allow businesses to unload.
The measure also provides space for public realm improvements, such as, seating, tree planting and cycle parking.
Beaufort Road middle – modal filter
A modal filter on Beaufort Road, west of the junction with Northcote Road.
This will help stop through traffic on Beaufort Road gaining access to Church Road (A420) and Summerhill Road (A431).
People will still be able to access the area by car using alternative routes, but would not be able to pass through this point.
People cycling will be able to travel through the middle of the filter.
Beaufort Road west – pocket park
A pocket park at the junction of Beaufort Road and Blackswarth Road.
This will help to stop through traffic from using Beaufort Road to cut through to Church Road (A420).
It will improve walking and cycling routes to schools by reducing traffic on the Wesley Way which runs along Beaufort Road.
People will still be able to access Beaufort Road by car using alternative routes, but would not be able to pass through this point.
People cycling will travel in the middle of the pocket park with the pedestrian crossing maintained.
Cobden Street – pocket park
A pocket park on Cobden Street at the junction of Morley Street and Victoria Avenue.
This measure will help stop through traffic coming from Avonvale Road and Marsh Lane.
Vehicles will be unable to pass through this point, but could still access the area by alternative routes.
Cycles will be able to pass through the middle of the modal filter.
The pocket park will link walking and cycling routes towards City Academy, Church Road and the Bristol to Bath Railway Path.
The measure will also provide space for public realm improvements, such seating and tree planting.
Crews Hole – traffic calming and crossing improvements
Longer-term improvements are planned for the Crews Hole area, including formal crossings at Netham Lock and Conham Road, lighting improvements alongside the River Avon path, and informal crossings at pinch points.
For the trial scheme, we will install temporary crossing and traffic calming improvements in the following locations:
next to Strawberry Lane footpath
next to Mama Bear's Day Nursery
next to the Crews Hole and Troopers Hill Road junction
Ducie Road, Barton Hill Road – pocket park
A pocket park on Barton Hill Road and Ducie Road.
This measure will stop through-traffic travelling from Days Road towards Church Road.
Planters will also be installed on Ducie Road to stop traffic entering the area around the grass island.
The measure will provide space for public realm improvements, such as seating and tree planting.
A parklet and cycle parking will be installed during the trial to provide seating space for people visiting Wellspring Settlement. Vehicles would not be able to pass through this point, but could still access the area by alternative routes. Cycles will be able to pass through the pocket park.
Ducie Road bridge – modal filter
A modal filter on the approach to the bridge over the railway to stop through traffic from Church Road (A420).
Vehicles will not be able to pass through this point, but could still access the area by alternative routes.
A cycle lane would be marked for people cycling towards Lawrence Hill station and the city centre.
Parking restrictions near the bridge are being reviewed so that more parking places could be reinstated.
Glebe Road – modal filter
A modal filter will stop through traffic travelling from Church Road (A420) via Beaufort Road.
Vehicles would not be able to pass through this point but could still access the area by alternative routes.
Cycles will be able to pass through the middle of the modal filter.
Grindell Road – two-way
Making Grindell Road two-way will give alternative options to people entering and exiting the area, rather than the steep approach from Pilemarsh onto Blackswarth Road.
This change will be monitored alongside the rest of the scheme.
Kingsmarsh Way – modal filter
A modal filter will help to stop through traffic between Croydon Street (A420) and St Philips Causeway (A4320).
Vehicles will not be able to pass through this point but could still access the area by alternative routes.
Car parking at Kingsmarsh House would remain accessible.
Lincoln Street – modal filter
A modal filter opposite Lincoln Gardens next to the turning area.
The measure will help to stop through traffic between Church Road (A420) and St Philips Causeway (A4320).
People cycling would travel through the middle of the filter.
The space created provides opportunity for public realm improvements, such as seating and tree planting.
Vehicles would not be able to pass through this point, but could still access the area by alternative routes.
Marsh Lane – bus gate
A bus gate will be installed on Marsh Lane between Glendare Street and Barton Court.
The following exemptions will be available at all the bus gates as part of the scheme:
emergency services
refuse vehicles
professional carers providing care within the community.
parents with children attending SEND schools
taxis and private hire vehicles
Disabled Class Vehicles
cycles and e-scooters
This would mean these vehicles will be able to drive through the bus gate without receiving a fine.
The exemptions in these locations mean that car journeys would be simpler for anyone providing professional care or who have challenging and time constrained journeys associated with care. The taxi and private hire exemption provides more flexibility for people working in the taxi trade and makes the area more accessible for people who rely on taxis.
The bus gate would also be enforced with cameras rather than a bollard, which means that emergency services would not have to remove a bollard during emergencies.
The bus gate futureproofs the scheme for a potential bus route connecting Barton Hill and Redfield to Temple Meads, the new university campus, and the city centre via Avonvale Road and Feeder Road.
Morton Street – one way
A one-way on Morton Street from south to north to allow locals to get to Church Road while reducing the chance to skip traffic on Church Road (A420) from the other direction.
The Avenue – modal filter
A modal filter using planters on The Avenue, west of the junction of Jubilee Road.
This would stop through traffic travelling along Beaufort Road gaining access to Church Road (A420) and Summerhill Road (A431).
The modal filter will make it easier and safer for people walking towards Troopers Hill.
People cycling would travel through the middle of the modal filter.
Vehicles would be unable to pass through this point but could still access the area by alternative routes.
Victoria Avenue east – pocket park
A pocket park outside Redfield Educate, at the junction of Victoria Avenue and Avonvale Road.
The pocket park will help stop through traffic between Avonvale Road and Church Road (A420).
Making the change will make it easier for parents and children walking, scooting, wheeling and cycling to school.
The space created will provide opportunities for public realm improvements, such as seating and tree planting.
A parklet will be installed during the trial for people visiting the school.
Draper Court residents will be able to access the shared car parking via Leonard Road and Victoria Avenue.
Vehicles will be unable to pass through this point but will be able to access the area by alternative routes.
Victoria Avenue west – modal filter
A modal filter on Victoria Avenue, east of the junction of Baden Road.
The measure will help stop through traffic between Avonvale Road and Church Road (A420), as well as improve walking and cycling on the Wesley Way route, which runs along Victoria Avenue.
Vehicles will not be able to pass through this point, but could still access the area by alternative routes. Cycles will be able to cycle through the middle of the modal filter.
Wicket Lane – modal filter
We initially proposed to install a pocket park at the junction of Cossham Road and Church Road (A420) to help stop traffic skipping the traffic signals at the junction of Blackswarth Road and Church Road (A420) via Wicket Lane.
However, we received concerns about how larger vehicles would exit the area, as they would need to use alternative streets that are less suitable, such as Seneca Street and Sherborne Street.
In response, we will install a modal filter on Wicket Lane. This will prevent vehicles from using Wicket Lane as a cut through to avoid the Chalks Road and Church Road junction.
