This project includes physical shopfront improvement works, alongside a long-term strategy for the high street.
Background
The council appointed a locally based consultant team, which is led by Architecture 00, alongside George Lovesmith, Uninvited Guests and Studio Mothership to deliver the project in May 2024. The team are working closely with local businesses and stakeholders to consider how resources are allocated to achieve the most impact and build a strong foundation for continued investment in the future. This will include: immediate upgrades to shop units, pilot projects, and potential long term funding options.
A corresponding public art programme led by Knowle West Media Centre, with support from Bristol City Council’s Arts Development Team, will support the production of public art within the high street. An artist in residency team have been appointed to lead the public art programme for one year from January 2025.

Filwood – How’s That Sound? Workshop
Uninvited Guests are running interactive workshops to capture ideas for the future of the Filwood Broadway High Street.
At these workshops participants share their ideas for the future high street. These Ideas are then brought to life by a performer alongside an immersive soundtrack composed by a musician. This shared vision for the future high street can be listened to here.
The vision created in these workshops will help shape the key themes in the High Street Delivery Plan.
Next steps
In late 2024 the team will be launching an application process for the shopfront improvements and working with business owners on the Broadway to define the scope of the improvement works.
Project Timeline
Physical shopfront and wider improvement works are expected to start on site in spring 2025 with completion by the end of 2025.
A programme of pop-ups / events will take place in 2025 to test ideas and inform the High Street Delivery Plan.
Funding
