Engagement has concluded
Bristol City Council have capital funding to undertake major public realm improvements to Filwood Broadway. This is part of a wider package of redevelopment and regeneration in the area and builds on the Filwood Broadway framework that was developed with the community some years ago.
The locally-led Filwood Broadway Working Group successfully bid for funding from the Create Streets Foundation to work with the community to agree a vision for what the changes to the public realm should be. This followed many months of the Filwood Broadway Working Group and the council working with the local community to gather their comments about what change they want in the area.
Create Streets organised two workshop sessions:
January 2022 - What is Urban Design?
Create Streets led residents, local businesses, and council officers in discussing what they liked and disliked about Filwood Broadway and other high streets around the country. It was an interesting day thinking about what makes somewhere a great place that you want to be in.
March 2022 – Ideas into Reality
The Create Streets team joined residents, local businesses, and council officers in developing ideas for making Filwood Broadway a more attractive and welcoming local high street. People worked in small groups to explore different design options.
Create Streets also developed two design options from the ideas in the workshops showing different concepts for how Filwood Broadway could look. They called these Option A Filwood Superblock and Option B Filwood Rambla.
The purpose of the survey below is to seek feedback on the two design options for Filwood Broadway. Your feedback will inform the development of the final design and what changes are made to the street.
Why your views matter
By listening to, and working closely with, local people and other stakeholders we can make sure that the changes to Filwood Broadway reflect the vision and aspirations of the community.
You can get involved now by providing your comments on the design options below.
Following this survey, a further workshop entitled the reCREATE FILWOOD workshop will be held with with local residents and businesses to explore the two design options for the public realm of Filwood Broadway in more detail and agree how to take the design forward. The results of this survey will used to inform the reCREATE FILWOOD workshop.
The workshop will be held at Christ the King Church Filwood Broadway from 11-2pm on Saturday 23 July.
Option A Filwood SuperBlock
This plan shows the road on Filwood Broadway reduced to two-way traffic with a central square at the crossroads with Hartcliffe Road. North of Hartciffe Road the road makes an S-bend to slow traffic and cars can park between new trees at the side of the road. Barnstaple Road and the road between the shops and the green would be pedestrianised. The new spaces can be used at different times for markets/events, with more greenspace and a better play area. Cyclists on the Filwood Greenway share the road with vehicles and there is a new junction and better road crossing to Creswicke Road. There would be a new gateway structure and pocket park at the southern, Creswicke Road, end.
Option B Filwood Rambla
This plan shows the road reduced to two-way traffic running up the east side of Filwood Broadway with a raised pedestrian priority crossing at Hartcliffe Road. The west side of Filwood Broadway becomes a wide tree-lined pedestrian route with a segregated cycle route. Cars can park between new trees at the side of the road. Barnstaple Road would be pedestrianised. The new spaces can be used at different times for markets/events, with more greenspace and a better play area. There would be a new ‘bandstand’ on the green and a new gateway arch structure at the southern, Creswicke Road, end. There is a new junction and better road crossing to Creswicke Road.
