Background to South Bristol Liveable Neighbourhoods
What are Liveable Neighbourhoods?
Liveable neighbourhoods are areas of a city that are improved to make them safer and healthier, with less noise and air pollution. They are neighbourhoods where everyone can access quality green spaces and safe spaces to play and feel a part of a community. The improvements aim to make it easier to catch a bus and to walk or cycle, with better facilities and less through traffic. Liveable neighbourhoods can encourage exercise, reduce loneliness, and make life better overall.
The changes can include simple things like more trees, benches and places for people to meet, or more complex things like changing how traffic moves through the area.
Liveable Neighbourhoods in Bristol
The East Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood is the first liveable neighbourhood project in Bristol. It covers Barton Hill and parts of Redfield and St George south of Church Road and north of the River Avon.
During 2022 and 2023, we worked closely with the local community to identify things they wanted to change and to design improvements. The scheme aims to achieve a better balance between how local streets are used by vehicles and people.
Early in 2024, Bristol City Council approved the East Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood trial scheme, and the changes will start happening on the ground later this year.
We are now starting work to plan South Bristol Liveable Neighbourhoods.
South Bristol Liveable Neighbourhoods
The South Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood project will consider the areas of Southville, Bedminster, Ashton Vale, Malago Vale, Windmill Hill and part of Totterdown. This area has been chosen because people who live here tell us about the challenges they face with traffic.
We are at the early planning stages of the project. Earlier this year, we started planning by collecting data on traffic, air quality, noise, and other information. We now want to hear from people who live, work, study and travel through these areas so we can design improvements that make the streets more people friendly.
Our aim is to work with the local community to design safer and quieter streets to encourage people to walk, cycle and wheel for shorter journeys, improve air quality, enhance the public realm and green spaces, and improve access to local high streets.
