A4018 Passage Road - Street tree felling consultation
This consultation has concluded.
This consultation was open from 24 March to 21 April 2025 via an online survey. Respondents could also respond to the tree felling notice via post.
Background
This work is the first phase of a series of transport improvements in preparation for the thousands of new homes that are being built nearby in South Gloucestershire as part of the Cribbs Patchway New Neighbourhood on the former airfield in Filton.
This project will help the reliability of the Number 1 bus and support additional passenger journeys from the new housing developments in South Gloucestershire.
Work has started along Passage Road, between Crow Lane roundabout and Charlton Road, to improve the sustainable transport network by building:
- A segregated two-way cycle lane on the eastern side
- Peak-hour (7-10am and 4.00-6.30pm) bus lanes running in either direction
- Relocation of the pedestrian crossing by the roundabout to be closer to the Knole Lane-Crow Lane desire line
- A new pedestrian crossing to the north of Dragons Wells Road

Removal of trees
In order to create space for the bus lane and cycleway, 21 trees (mainly saplings, of various species) are required to be removed from the eastern-side of the highway and the central reservation. These trees are mainly self-sown as well as mainly saplings. As part of the new scheme design, 29 new trees will be planted.
The map below show the five sections along Passage Road where trees are being removed and new trees planted:

Our commitment to trees
As a council, we are committed to increasing the number of trees in Bristol with 100,000 trees planted since 2015 as part of the One Tree Per Child and Trees for Streets programmes.
Consultation Timing
We previously consulted on the tree removal through the public consultation on the whole scheme, which was signed off by the Transport Cabinet Member in 2021. This was the only means available to consult on tree removal at the time. There are now new rules that only came into force once we had progressed the project further into the start of delivery. This consultation will be open from Friday 21 March until Friday 18 April 2025.
