20mph limits review feedback

The 20mph review went out to public consultation in the summer of 2018. The council carried out an online and paper version of the survey which sought views on how the 20mph speed limit operates in practice. The aim of the 20mph review was to identify whether any localised adjustments were needed to the 20mph speed limit across the city in order to improve its effectiveness.

In total, 3341 online responses and 50 paper surveys were received. In response to the consultation questions, 95% agreed with 20mph limits operating by schools, 74% agreed with limits operating on residential roads and 44% on main roads. Participants also stated speed preferences for specific roads in each ward and added comments on other roads not specified in the consultation. When commenting on individual roads the majority of feedback indicated a preference to not make any changes.

Stakeholders including the police, Bristol Cycling Campaign, First Group, Road Peace and schools also overwhelmingly backed the retention of the 20mph limit.

We have created two reports which are both available on: https://www.bristol20mph.co.uk/find-out-more/research-and-monitoring. One provides a summary of the consultation responses and the other outlines the approach to the consultation and decisions agreed.

Of the 90 roads reviewed, just 17 were earmarked for further investigation based on the information collated. Only five of those had speed data where a change in limit could be considered. However, the majority of support was for no change on these five roads, while another four roads required no action due to low speeds. A further eight roads with slightly higher speeds have been earmarked for additional measures. These include additional lineage, signs and community-led initiatives such as Community Speed Watch, which will be rolled out over the next year.
